Gift from God.Using this technique of connecting mind with heart for inner prayer healed me of spiritual sickness I was carrying for 20 years. The simple spiritual practice of orthodox prayer is what my spirit was seeking. Simple mindfulness or Cognitive Behavioral therapy wasnt bring the healing of spiritual wholeness this brought me. I also recommend other Orthodox Psyschotherapy books ..extremely helpfu!
I purchased "The Art of Prayer: An Orthodox Anthology" after reading some other books on Orthodox spirituality. I'm a practicing Roman Catholic and have read several books on prayer and spirituality. This is my first foray into Orthodox prayer and I must say, I'm completely impressed with the contents of this book.It suggests methods of prayer that have hitherto been unknown to me. The book centers on the concept of the "Prayer of the Heart". This method is done by focusing ones attention to the area of the heart and praying short, frequent prayers. The book goes into the benefits of the prayer of the heart and how to apply the prayer to different aspects of one's life. After reading the book and understanding the method of the Prayer of the Heart, I realized that there have been times in my own spiritual practice that unbeknownst to me, I have practiced this type of prayer. However, in reading the book and applying the directions for this type of prayer, what was once a "hit or miss" approach, has now become very focused and direct. It has enhanced my prayer life immeasurably.I recommend this book to a person of any Christian denomination. The Orthodox church has been in existence since the time of Christ and clearly there is much any person could learn from its Saints, Fathers, practices and traditions. Finally, I must mention the general appearance of the book. The book is written in an older font that is not as clear as some of the more modern fonts. Normally I would take a star or half star away from the rating due to the less than clear appearance of the book. However, the contents are so good and potentially life changing, that it still gets the full 5 stars.Buy it! And learn a new way to pray.
Features St. Theophan the Recluse. Great help to me. Illuminates prayer of the heart instead of the mind. It is a gift to us. Not a beginnersbook.
This extraordinary title has been carried by Amazon for many years. The current publisher Farrar,Straus& Girouxhave no plans to re-issue. I was told by them that if Amazon called, they would listen: (212)-741-6900
“Remembrance of God is something that God Himself grafts upon the soul. But the soul must also force itself to persevere and to toil. Work, making every effort to attain the unceasing remembrance of God. And God, seeing how fervently you desire it, will give you this constant recollection of Himself.â€This book is a wonderful and clear guide in developing an interior life.
This is the book that Thomas Merton used as a reference to his talks to the novice Monks at the Abbey of Gethsemani whilehe was alive in the mid sixties. It is well worth it as a reference and source of the origins and meaning of the timeless prayer that has been said for centuries both in Orthodox Christian and other Christian belief systems.
"Let no-one think, my fellow Christians, that only priests and monks need pray without ceasing, and not laymen. No, no: every Christian without exception ought to dwell always in prayer. How can this be done? Thoughts jostle one another like swarming gnats, and emotions follow on the thoughts." (from The Art of Prayer)In this modern and restless world is it even possible to always be in prayer? The cell phone is ringing, the computer dinging, the iPod singing - is there ever even a moment of silence in which to be in prayer? If you despair of ever having a moment of peace to pray, and are discouraged that, with your busy schedule, you cannot find a moment with the Lord, take heart. This little book (just 279 pages) can teach you how to always be in the presence of God.Although at times repetitive, the points this book makes are worth repeating. Best taken in "niblets", or small bites, so as best to absorb the wisdom contained in it, it is ideal for just-before-bed reading, or to use for meditation. I highly recommend it for those who are serious about their prayer life, or who want to be.
in as few words as possible i would like to say that this is like a bible for me - i have just started reading it and already i can feel the sheer power in its utter humility - the way in which the use of prayer is explained to be the essence of any method or practice is unique in it's directness - i have not read a book on Christian Prayer or any Christian book for that matter which covers simply and unswervingly, what i call, the Heart of All Religion - i have always been scared by the word 'orthodox'...until now - now i understand what the word means to me - i recommend this book over any other like it - i guarantee you will not be displeased - now for the practice..."Pray without ceasing" (5:17)
